“The Engineer” of the Online Poker Room

“The Engineer” of the Online Poker Room

I opened up the recent edition of my hometown’s social scene magazine and what catches my eye—a poker tournament. Not just any poker tournament, but the Derby Poker Championship No Limit Texas Hold’Em poker room. For the last three years the Derby Poker Championship has brought celebrities and some of the biggest names in poker to Louisville, Kentucky. 2010 was no different. Poker legends Phil Helmuth and Chris “Jesus” Ferguson played alongside actors Jesse Spencer (a.k.a., Dr. Chase from “House”) and comedian Ron White.

This year’s tournament was sponsored by Jim Beam (a bourbon maker), Twin Spires (an online gambling site), and UB.net (an online poker room). Fitting for a Kentucky Derby Week event! The tournament had a buy-in of 0, and 51% of the buy-ins, add-ons and re-buys were donated to local charities. Starting out with 108 players, this year’s winner is one of Kentucky’s own, Rich Muny.

Muny reaped over ,000 at this year’s Derby Poker Championship. He is a methodic, calculated player. He frequently admitted to balancing the stakes he played with his level of success. “If I found myself on a bad run, I reduced the stakes I played to properly manage my bankroll,” he said. “Over time, I won significantly more than I lost.”

Ask a professional poker player about Rich Muny and they may say “Who?” But, if you say “What do you know about ‘The Engineer’?” They know exactly who he is. He is an interesting member of the poker community. He is an engineer by trade, and started playing poker at the height of the online boom in 2005. He acknowledged reading through several online poker room reviews before choosing Full Tilt online poker room. In several interviews, he has stated that Andy Bloch is one of his major influences as a player not to mention that Andy’s also an engineer!

“The Engineer” is also diehard advocate for Internet poker nationally and statewide in Kentucky. Kentucky is and has been a hostile ground for poker with the most recent issue being the forfeiture of 141 Internet gambling domain names. The state is also suing several online poker rooms recouping funds lost by Kentucky residents. Muny is a board member of the Poker Players Alliance (PPA), a national lobbying group. On June 1, 2010, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) took affect aiming to stop online gambling by preventing credit card companies and banks from processing fund transfers for unlawful Internet gambling. Muny has been working with PPA and filing petitions to exempt online poker from the UIGEA.

He is a writer and blogger about everything from fiscal responsibility to poker rights. He is the moderator for the PocketFive, poker legislation discussion board. Muny is also a contributing columnist to BigGovernment.com.

Rich Muny is the embodiment of the poker community. He is smart and knowledgeable about his game, his foes and the rules of game. He stands up to big government. He is not afraid to got all in because he knows the risks. He has systematically built solid foundation and reputation in the world of poker, just like a good engineer.

Online Poker Room Reviews: How to Choose an Online Site

After learning poker and loving it, you will soon discover that even when there are no home poker games at your friends’, you can still practice or gamble in the comforts of your own home. Not everyone can be comfortable playing poker in a casino so good online poker sites can be a great alternative.

So, what are the online poker room reviews that you should know of and how does one choose a great, secure and reliable online site?

There are a number of factors you have to consider when choosing a poker room. The factors include software used by the poker site, the bonus or bonuses offered, number of people playing on the site and reputation. Let us help you with our online poker room reviews guideline on how to choose the best possible site for you.

Online Poker Room Review Guideline #1: Poker Software

In order for a site to be reliable, it needs a good software as its main machine. An online casino’s backbone is the software. It is what customers use every single time they log in. You use it for registration, for support, to choose a game and to distribute a bonus. A big time online casino will only get the services of well-tested, service-oriented software companies.

Online Poker Room Review Guideline #2: How Many People Are Playing?

The next important element to choosing the site is to find out how many people are playing on the poker site. I mean, you need other poker players to play poker right? The more players are playing, the better it is to find a player to match your skill and competency. The more players in an online site, the more people you can beat (as long as you avoid the players who can beat you). Gambling is a numbers game after all, so the more people to a sight, the more reliable that site appears.

Online Poker Room Review Guideline #3: Your choices of games are better.

This part is for those people who are not big fans of the Texas Hold em poker game variety. If you are already a fan of Holdem, then it doesn’t matter that your online site offers more variety. However, if you like less than common poker versions, like perhaps the Razz or 5 card draw, it is important that you find out if the online site you are supporting has that game. In the competitive world of online casino, there is bound to be a site that will have what you need. So, stop settling for just an ordinary gambling site and research well so that you can play at the exact conditions that you want.

Legal Questions of Visiting an Online Poker Room

Online poker is very popular, but it also seems to that visiting an online poker room is like treading into murky water with regard to the law. One must dig a little deeper to find out why playing poker online is viewed differently by the law that playing poker in a casino.

Casinos are highly regulated businesses, so it should not be a surprise to learn that online casinos and poker in particular is tightly controlled. So controlled in fact that hosting an online real money poker room is illegal in the US. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that passed in 2006 made it illegal to run online casinos from within in the United States. It is also illegal to advertise playing poker for real money on television. This is why poker sites have to be so specific about the different rules for different countries. Just as each state regulates where and how gambling can occur inside their territory, the United States passed a law making this interstate and often international activity against the rules.

While inside a casino, the identity of the player can be verified. Game play online poker rooms, on the other hand, could be done by anyone with a bank account. Even sites that verify Passports or other ID’s could not be sure that the person at the keyboard was truly the person who was identified. For these and other reasons states have tried passing various laws controlling online gaming. Instead, web sites are hosted in various foreign countries. The sites also advertise their legal services like fake money games and poker schools.

Since playing with fake money is also a great option for beginners, advertising this option is not a bad idea. New poker player can play against real people with no fear of losing all their money and build their skills in a safe environment. As one gets a feel for the game one can start reading various poker room reviews and move into the realm of playing with real money. Intermediate players can often play at multiple tables at a time improving their style of game play quickly.

Poker room reviews will always include if the online poker room is legal in the United states, and often give the new player advice about how to use the poker software to build better poker skills. As online poker becomes more mainstream and states recognize the lost revenue from taxes, the laws might become more in-line with those of brick and mortar casinos and poker rooms.
